Chess Openings Pro App Reviews

No Horizontal View

I paid money for this app and discovered this. This app does not support Horizontal view. It only supports Vertical view. iPad apps should support both.

Great idea...

Fantastic idea, and the inclusion of the engine is wonderful, but the app could benefit from an openings list thats sortable by effectiveness against certain lines---in addition to the alphabetical listing. It would also be nice to expand the database of played games, so one could follow the lines a bit deeper than they currently go (i.e., eight or so moves). (And, ideally, one would love to be able to follow complete games.). Overall, though, its a great app for portable analysis and study.

Openings

Helped improve my openings so much. The app makes it easy to memorize and learn new openings and lines, also contains a vase array of common and uncommon openings. I strongly recommend this app with you are looking to improve your opening game. DubbleX

Love it

Just the app I was looking for to learn chess openings more thoroughly. Great interface, excellent database. Thank you.

Needs enhancement

I love puzzles, I recommend showing position Desired from every opening / setup.

Awesome, comprehensive App!

5 stars. Nuff said

Great Support and Training App

I love this app and how it helps to study openings and play out the openings to see how the middle game will develop!!!

always crashes

not a very stable app, always crashes on both iphone and ipad.

I hope you still intend to upgrade the design…

This is a very good app for learning chess openings. There is a very wide selection of variations also. I know my complaint of the appearance of the first page (the menu page) may seem petty, but those pea-soup green blocks against the pale brown wood makes the app look as if its from those "3G days"… And now that theres iOS7, that looks NEEEEEEEDS an update. Please do us appreciaters of your app this favor.

Disappointing

The UI is atrocious. Theres an undo button floating randomly that means "go back" but theres no go forward. The "position of the day" is always that starting position. I have no idea what the point of this is yet it takes up 1/4 of the main screen. The quizzes ask things like "whats the 2nd most popular move here?". Who cares?! Sometimes it asks the same question twice in a row. I expected to be given an opening, say, French Defense, and then playing as white or black try to stay in book. The catalog of openings is impressive, but they should be further stratified as currently the list is so long that its difficult to navigate. E.g. The top level of the hierarchy would be Kings Pawn, Queens Pawn, etc. Id like to be able to move pieces around the board and have the app tell me the name and variation of the opening, if any, but theres nothing like that.

Great

The app is very simple to use and allows you to really use statistics in your chess strategy. The amount of data in the database could be increased however. Id recommend this app

Best openings app

This is the best openings app that Ive found. I use both the vertical opening book mode and the horizontal play mode, which shows the computer assessment of each position. Fun to play along with a master game and see where they go astray.

Quiz needs work

Its hard to tell whats going on with the quiz. It claimed the most popular response to 1. e4 was e5. I agree but not that the popularity was 0.01. It asks whats the second most popular response to a move and then a good bit of the time claims all the popularities are 0.00. Its almost a guessing game that cannot really help you out at all.

Needs Update!

too many bugs in the quiz section

Superb App

Well-done, a terrific aid for learning / reviewing a large list of openings. The playing engine and its analysis are unique. For anyone wanting to better their game, this is a must-have.

Outstanding Training Program

This app is great for learning or reviewing chess openings. I also like the fact that it isnt an internet-based app, so it always works.

Needs improvement

I like the concept but the quiz mode needs fixing as there are too many bugs in the app. Sometimes it says you got the correct answer when the results indicate you did not. The popularity and statistical numbers make absolutely no sense at all and are usless.

Thank you for a great collection of book moves

Exhaustive catalog of openings which can be played interactively. Just what Ive been looking for. Well worth the price.

Opening user

Great opening application buy advanced works well

Okay.

Thank you very much for the update. It works well on my iPhone 6. Still, a few things... No arrow indicators, to help easily move the pieces, have been removed; I missed the smooth transitioning of the pieces when they attack. I like the way before how the panel (the board) used to flip over, that feature was removed as well. Lastly, the automatic sequence of the opening moves have been removed as well with just a a push of the arrow indicator. Hopefully, you can reimplement and add these back on again. Its already too late for me, since I already updated this app. Chess pro, fan.
